“An indigenous woman in Pastoralist Communities is one with a big heart”
Human Rights & the Rights of Indigenous Women
The undying traditional culture of pastoralists is highly treasured by the communities and cannot be washed away any time soon. Since some cultural practices are retrogressive, CSI has introduced a culture-sensitivity approach with a view to transform the perception of indigenous ethnic groups.
Culture-sensitivity approach recognizes the need for transformation while at the same time embracing positive cultural practices, retrogressive practices which Human Rights and the rights of women must be addressed decisively. Our approach at CSI is to involve men who have traditional roles in the village as Champions for women’s Rights. They join hands with women leaders to fight against FGM, GBV, early marriages, arranged and forced marriages, limited rights on land ownership and all forms of exclusion.
CSI is also working with the National Police Service to enforce government policy on free and compulsory education at primary and secondary levels. Our greatest concern remain to be school going girls in rural areas who are likely to be married off at early stages, even before they finish their secondary education.
